From one shell, two materials

Every year Thailand is left with more than 50,000 tonnes of discarded green mussel shell. AVALON Artisan Gallery is a sustainable design studio that began as a luxury jewelry maker in 1988.

At the heart of the work is circular design. From a single shell, the nacre layer is extracted to become MyraGem for jewelry, while the body of the shell becomes MyraShell, an innovative material that diffuses fragrance on its own without electricity, used for wall panels, lighting, and decorative objects.

These are zero waste products designed that way from the very beginning, recognised with the National Innovation Award 2026 for Environment.

4 steps, all led by hand

  1. 1

    Raw material preparation

    Mussel shells are collected from the Chonburi community enterprise, cleaned, sorted, and graded by size.

  2. 2

    Material processing

    The nacre layer is separated from the calcium carbonate layer through the studio's own process.

  3. 3

    Colour development

    Colour palettes are designed and refined using digital tools, calibrated to align with each collection.

  4. 4

    Finishing and testing

    Each surface is hand-finished by an artisan, then tested for strength and durability.

Every piece is assessed across three areas of impact

  • Environment

    Thailand throws away more than 50,000 tonnes of mussel shell every year. This is the problem the studio works on.

    Income and skills go back to coastal communities in Chonburi province, through the Chonburi Fisheries Association and the Sawang Prateep Community Enterprise.
